The miners union estimates a job loss of at least 70,000 because there markets for the coal they dig. They of using coal for ways social need and not profit, and to replace the madness of nuclear power.

miners know that this means a head-on clash with the governinent. Their pickets and solidarity appeals are a direct challenge to Tebbit's laws.

Victory for the miners will be victory for all the workers fighting closure, redundancy, productivity screws and attacks union rights Solidarity action with the miners is a chance for the labour movement to unite to take on lac Tories. HARRY BYGATE, branch secretary of the National of Seamen in Aberdeen told Socialist Action about their solidarity action.

National leaders of the NUS the NUM got could help the miners in what was then an overtime ban.

I went down to Edinburgh meet the executive of the Scottish area NUM. They needed our knowledge of the North East coast OI Scotland where there many small ports and we knew foreign coal is being off. loaded.

These ports are very small non 'here is aso no railwar line to them, so the coal is being transported by lorry with non union drivers. This makes it very difficult to deal with these imports. The NUS has decided to ships foreign coal. That means our members will not crew these ships. Where we find that ships already underway carrying foreign coal, we will stop that coal being offloaded The coal that comes to the North East of Scotland is mainly Polish. The actions of the NUS will help but the NUM has also had talks with the Polish official inions to ensure that thi use foreig coal to fill the gap left b We are waiting for the arrival of a British ship carrying coal I from South Africa to Ravenscraig steelworks. It is expecte either next weekend or the weekend after.

We will stop this coal being offloaded, necessary by taking con trol of the ship.
