Matt Merrigan speaking at the Dublin Tally THE REGIONAL Sub-Committee of the NEC is recommending that the national agent should take direct control of the Wythenshawe Labour Party.
The reason for this extreme proposal is a complaint received from USDAW in relation to their delegate to the constituency.
We don't know exactly the regional subcommice is proposing as we've only read about it in the Evening The local Labour Club isn't letting us into our offices to receive our mail.
Chair Wythenshawe CLP The problems for the NEC began the Woodhouse Park Ward of the constituency. The sitting councillor, right winger Tom Farrell, wasn't accepted onto the Constituency The ward shortlisting was this sorted out, and finally a Ich shortlisting was held in February.
It was agreed that votes would be accepted from those who had been members tor 2 months before 2 December - the Cale ok which the had decided to delay the shortlisting. This WaN agreed by the NEC, and the right and left in the ward.
Everyone mobilised, but Tom Farrell didn't even get on the shortlist!
The selection was fixec for 22 February. At thi meeting Joe Paine, the election agent, challenged the validity of votes, , saying the freeze date should have been 17 November. This was rejected and the selection took place.
BRIEFING Joe Paine tried every tactic to get the selection reconvened involving the NEC, the region, the district party and the constituency.
He insisted that David Hughes, the national agent, had told him to call When he went ahead and selection SUCCUM distributed notices for new selection, the constituency executive suspend ed him from his job. Tha was when the Labour Club locked us out.
Nomination On the 9 April Tom Farrell's nomination as an candidate went in, signed by the right wing in the ward. I think they realised this would put themation water, nomination was later withdrawn.
It was at this point that the regiona subthe NEC Connilice discussed Wythenshawe. direct control of the CLP unless we have a recal AGM.
Their grounds are a spurious charge that we have ignored complaints from an USDAW delegate
