or charges, sales SHARPVILLE. On Monday, demonstrators began to gather in townships in different parts of South Africa determined to surrender their hated passes and demanding to be jailed.

In Sharpville, a black township south of Johannesburg, a crowd of several thousand gathered early in the morning, forming a procession three-quarters of a mile long.

They explained to the police that they wanted to be arrested for not carrying their passes. The police responded with tear gas and baton charges.

Shortly after 1.30pm, without any warning, the police began shooting. The crowd started laughing thinking that blanks were being used.

The laughter quickly turned into terror as bodies started falling. When the shooting stopped, the area around the police station was cluttered with bodies.

According to the official count there were 67 killed in Sharpville that day, and more than 180 injured.

The majority of them were shot in the back.
