Please send donations, and the bankers orders, to Socialist Action, 329 Upper Street, London N.1. Summary To make sure that I've correctly understood what you're outlining would it be fair to summarise your views roughly as Firstly the party has elected a leader by a democratic process — a leadership which must be accepted and must be Two that the party must unite itself to the maximum extent to fight against the Tories, the Alliance, and the threats against the labour movement.

Thirdly that within that framework the party must have a broad discussion on policies, structure and so on which in many ways actually amounts to a refounding of the Labour Party — not of course going back to square one but a refounding on a higher level of an Yes. Together with the preparation for the future. I think the preparatory element is very important. And preparation in the broadest sense. Preparation for office, preparing for what you do in the industry you work in, the factor! you work in, the community you work in, the local authority.

Preparation which goes to such a point that it actually provides some framework for your current activities as opposed to just waiting for the day when 'it'll be alright' because there will te a Labour government. I think it is this preparatory element, which gives meaning and depth and reality to the discussion and to the solidarity and unity of the moment. Its got to rotate around a strong preparatory element.

Next Week Peter Hain continues the discussion @ Copyright Socialist Action, April 1984.
